As a mother who did stop nursing b/c of no supply this comment of
ignorance as an excuse hits hard. So I feel I need to chime in. My
body was absolutely physically traumatized by my hospital staff landing
me with a spinal headache which lasted for 3 weeks. There was no
sitting up to nurse, my daughter would not latch laying down and so she
lost ALOT of weight. Because I couldn't sit up I couldn't pump (there
was no one to pump my breasts for me while I layed there). Yes I did
receive misinformation about a lot of things especially the fact that it
may take up to 10 days for my milk to come in, but after 3 weeks of
trying to pump every two hours despite my headache and nursing for
sometimes hours on ends when she would latch, I still had no milk. Just
drops of colostrum. Which was actually good for her immune system but
not good for her weight. 11 days post pardom I was in the hospital
again with gall bladder problems and actually had surgery at 6 weeks
post pardom. Fate was just against me and I did not have enough support
from L/C's or LLL b/c no one could seem to pin point what was causing
the lack of milk. So for me it was neither ignorance or selfishness. I
cried desparately when I had to stop due to meds and so to hear this
comment strikes home. My goal though is to prevent it from happening to
other women. Sooo off to study I go and hopefully I can make a
difference.
