i feel sure i got this idea somewhere (didn't come up with myself, that is),
but i think that the maternity leave offered in countries seems to align with
population. that is, in countries where there is a small population, or an
effort to actually increase the population, there seems to be much better
support for mothers and babies. in countries like the usa, where the
population is booming, there doesn't seem to be much support for babies (in
general, too, not just maternity leave). this is a complicated issue, and i
know, in china they may have great maternity leave since the number of
children is severely limited, socialist countries have a more nurturing
supportive attitude, etc., but  there seems to be a connection with
population. maybe kathy knows?
