Thanks, Denny, for posting the link to the adoptive nursing article! I am
really glad that they interviewed Kerry Yancy-Dolan. I think, however, that
it is misleading, about the Newman/Goldfarb protocol. Is this my paranoia,
or does it look to everyone else like that article is suggesting that taking
domperidone constitutes using the Newman/Goldfarb protocol? It doesn't
sound to me like Kerry used the protocol.

Due to multiple concerns about it, I think it is very important that women
be clear on exactly what this protocol is, and what the potential benefits
and adverse effects are (it is far from a guarantee of a full milk supply,
with little or no risk). It is also essential that women understand that
this protocol is new, but the practice of breastfeeding adopted babies is as
old as mankind. I would have to say that, measuring success as a happy,
healthy baby, being nurtured at the breast for a long period of time
recieving the benefit of some amount of breast milk, the overall success
rate has declined over the few years that this protocol has been advertized
as God's gift to adoptive mothers. Certainly, we have seen a larger
percentage of women for whom attempting to nurse an adopted baby is a
stressful experience. There have also been babies who have missed out on
the multiple benefits of a normal, healthy experience of being nurtured at
their mothers' breasts.

Aloha,
Darillyn
