This is my first live interaction with Lactnet after being a lurker for
several years.
I know a woman who has Von Willebrands disease and would like to
breastfeed. She had a c-section and is now receiving Alphanate (a Factor
eight product, prepared from pooled human plasma)and will continuing
receiving it for several more days. Before this episode, she stated she
only needs the Factor 8 product occasionally, she has had years where she
has not needed any. She also received several units of blood and is
currently pumping. She and the baby are both in ICU's. The baby has not
yet received any breastmilk. Is anyone familiar with the use of Alphanate
and breastfeeding?

I also want to know if there are any women who are discouraged from
breastfeeding after receiving blood and other blood products. The MD's I
have spoke with have no concern of these mom's breastfeeding. I haven't
found any published information on this. I am still haunted from Ms.
Glasser(sp)case several years ago, dying from AIDS, which was reportly
caused by a postpartum tranfusion. Of course, my concern is then passing it
on the infant through the breastmilk. I know the blood supply is much
safer now. I would appreciate any feedback. Just questioning, and looking a
little more concrete argument one way or the other.
