On a personal note, when I had my son I wasn't sure how comfortable I'd be
nursing in public, as I'm a modest person by nature.
However, it came naturally to me to feed my son whenever he was hungry, be
it in my home, in a restaurant, in a store....wherever. I was not about to
go into a restroom stall to feed him as I'd heard some nursing moms do!
Bottle fed babies don't eat in restroom stalls and neither would my baby!
I've actually never received a negative comment from anyone. Gotten a lot
of smiles, but never anything negative. (Except from my mother in law!) My
son is an active 14 month old now and sometimes public nursing isn't
as "discreet" as it used to be, but at this point it really doesn't bother
me if I'm "exposed" for a fraction of a second.
Breasts were made to nourish and nurture a child (I'm not diminishing the
sexual nature of breasts, but isn't their *primary* purpose lactation?).
Unfortunately, the media has made them a selling tool for things like beer
ads. The only way our nation will treat breastfeeding women with respect is
if nursing in public is more prevalent, and women choose to breastfeed
publicly in an unashamed, unapologetic way.
Ok, I'll step off my soapbox now.....
Jenny
