Have her thyroid hormone levels been checked? I think I remember the
mention of missing pigment on this list a little while ago with the possible
connection to thyroid disorder. If her thyroid hormone levels are out of
whack it could affect milk production.

Subject: AM I missing something?

I am working with a woman, and because she was told I could "make a man
nurse," i feel a little bit pressured:)
Baby was born with no complications, mom reports no medical history, no
problems getting pregnant. the first day i met them, the baby sat there
with
the nipple at his lips and would not latch; just sat there, didn't fight it
but
would not be tempted. So, She finger fed for a week. Now, he latches
pretty
well, but only with a shield. Ok. There are worse things. But she is not
making milk, and i can't figure out why.

Normal puberty growth, normal development in pregnancy, early and frequent
breastfeeding after birth. She is taking goat's rue and fenugreek, and she
noticed a little improvement, but not much. A great pumping, which i know
isn't always indicative, only produces about an ounce. She is small
breasted,
but they are symmetrical and round, and I have seen women who appear "flat"
(and i remember one baby who was choking and sputtering and tummy hard as
a rock after about five minutes eating because his mom had soooo much milk,
and she really didn't look like she had any storage capacity) but produce
plenty of milk. She has some skin discoloration, like some pigment is
missing,
her areolas are lighter than her breasts but she reports no health problems.

One thing she mentioned last night, though her two sisters nurse with no
problem, her mother tried with the first two, but reportedly never had
enough
and didn't try with the rest.

Am I missing something?
