Cathy, Your ways of educating moms and hospital staff about how valuable
those droplets of colostrum are really rang a bell. When I'm showing a mom
how to express her milk, I often hold a spoon and catch each little drop,
and show her how to feed it to the baby, even if he is asleep, "so as not to
waste even one tiny drop - it's like liquid gold", all the while crooning
about the colour, the syrupy consistency, the "richness" of it. I find that
this encourages a mom who is concerned that she is not making a lot of milk
yet - to know that any quantity, no matter how small, is so valuable that
the baby should have it. It's also easy to teach hand-expression at this
time, when the breasts are really soft.
