Chris: I think I understand your scenario. One of the employees is back
at work now and wanting to use the MOTHERS (as in patient) pump room to
pump in.
Where I come from, we make every effort to support breastfeeding working
mothers, but our patients have first priority. We are here first to serve
our patient population, then ourselves. We have an "employee" pump room on
the ground floor of the hospital that is for employees as well as visitors
to other areas of the hospital to use. For example, if a nursing mother is
here at the hospital with a family member for day surgery and her baby is
not with her, she can use that room to pump during her time here. Any
employee can use the room during their shift. It is outfitted with a
couple of rockers, some breastfeeding information, a sink, and an SMB
pump. Each person is responsible for having their own kit.
The OB staff can use one of the unit's pumps and use any available empty
room. Occasionally, one of the staff will use my office. We do not have a
separate pump room on our unit. The SCN moms pump at their baby's bedside -
we put portable screens up around the baby's bed. Dads are encouraged to
involve themselves in this aspect of their baby's care.
All I ask is that each employee have their own kit and clean up after
themselves, which includes wiping down the pump after use with Cavi-Wipes
and returning the pump to the nursery.
I just don't think it's right to exclude dads from this important aspect of
their baby's care to accommodate an employee's wish. She should be using
her office or another designated place on the unit, that is away from
direct patient care. My humble opinion...
