In her new book, "Dr. Mom's Guide to Breastfeeding," Dr. Marianne Neifert
says she advocates "ice in the treatment of engorgement, mastitis, sports
injuries, and other conditions..." P. 243. She goes on to say that she does
not advocate it for sore nipples, partly because she feels there is a risk of
injury to the skin. I have had many women tell me that ice has been the one
thing that gave them the MOST relief for sore nipples (when the pain was
occurring only at the beginning of the feeding in the early days of
breastfeeding.) Consequently, I have recommended it for many years. I, of
course, always stress that ice should not be placed directly on the skin.
Any other thoughts on this....?
