The preferred "method" around my parts is to do an ultrasound of the uterus
for fragements. I'm not sure how accurate this is, though. I had one mom for
whom they did not do the ultrasound until *after* she finally passed some
large clots and tissues, and of course at that point they found nothing. If
US is accurate, it would give quicker feedback. However, I'm really
intrigued about the possibility of testing progesterone levels. Pamela, I
would recommend that for the next several cases of potential retained
placental fragments that are tested, that you also match them with
"controls", women of equal postpartum age and normal lactation, to see what
the parallel levels are.
