Thanks, Sarah, for your feedback about my pump question. In the current
heat in the U.S., a frozen pump flange sounds inviting -- but I do wonder
if nipple spasm or delayed MER could be a problem for some moms.

Meanwhile, I have been wondering what is actually being told to moms who
are pumping for premature infants regarding how and how often they should
wash and sterilize their pump parts. How do health care providers wrangle
with how much emphasis on caution in milk handling will lead to the
abandonment of pumping by a family? When the rubber hits the road, so many
things about mom's milk are so crucial to infant gut development, and so
many things about artificial milk are damaging, that the tradeoffs with any
medical emphasis on minimizing contamination must be a concern. I wonder
what medical folks are actually recommending, and how much they practice
"don't ask -- don't tell" about how parents handle the milk they are
bringing to infants in the hospital, or the milk they are pumping for
non-latching infants when they go home. I can imagine it would be hard for
a hospital employee to lay bare what their actual practice is out of
liability concerns. Might any parents on the list who have provided pumped
milk for their hospitalized babies relate their experiences?
