Just want to mention when I first started helping bf moms, about 1982, the
pump collection system contained a wide mouthed container with a snap on lid
that was the flange. I think it was a Medela setup. I guess eventually this
evolved into a bottle as the collection container.
Also, re bottles for bf babies: I appreciate all the posts on this issue. I
think what the 10 steps are trying to do is to prevent normal bf dyads from
interference by all sorts of things like bottles, central nurseries, and
being whisked away from mom right at birth. And the code is trying to keep
mothers from being influenced by marketing. Now I also realize that some
babies who have feeding problems, or very young babies who are separated
from their moms (return to FT work at 6 wks), often "need" bottles (of
course they really don't). I agree that even babies who have bottles can
return to breast. The big problem is mothers don't persist (I'm not flaming
them) when they experience some breast rejection and/or their milk supplies
go down. Very complex issues indeed and the local and global culture
overlays all of it.
