Study Finds US Among Top Ten Countries In Pre-Term Births.
HealthDay (6/8, Preidt) reports on a study by researchers from Save the Children in South Africa and published June 7 in the Lancet finding that "worldwide, nearly 15 million babies were born prematurely in 2010" and that "the majority of premature births -- 60 percent -- occurred in developing nations in south Asia and sub-Saharan Africa." Yet, "the United States is among the 10 countries with the highest number of premature births," with 517,000 "born preterm" in 2010. The study also found that just three countries -- Croatia, Ecuador and Estonia â?" saw a decrease in pre-term births "between 1990 and 2010," while rates "remained stable in 14 others."
