Megan wrote about the GI Specialist who previously recommended weaning for
a trial period to see if a baby was "allergic" to her mother's milk--and
then, after discovering the baby is doing well on exclusive breastfeeding
with a maternal diet eliminating soy and dairy, said that it would be hard
to exclusively breastfeed for a year:

I know many women, including myself, who due to severe food allergies in
the nursling and/or a history of severe food allergies in the family,
exclusively breastfed their nurslings for a year--or even a little longer.
The only difficulties were in dealing with people who thought that
exclusive breastfeeding for a year was not thinkable much less doable and
that the nursling would "starve" if not eating "real food" (i.e., food that
meets the cultural definition of food).

Making the transition from whatever a mother had been eating to whatever
she needs to eat to keep her own body or that of her nursling content is
not inherently horrible or impossible. Learning how to eat a new, balanced
diet without the offending foods takes time and energy. Living with
symptoms of allergy and intolerance in yourself and your nursling takes
even more. Women need more credit for their desire and capacity to be
proactive with their and their children's well-being via life-style
changes.

Best wishes to the mother, Kim, and her content baby, Ellie,

Cynthia
