I don't think Lynn was off base at all. For most of human history,
babies were not exposed to any germs that their immediate family had
not been exposed to. Babies were not "farmed out" to people outside
the immediate circle. If it weren't for the marvelous ability of
mom's mammaries to give babies immunities I do believe more would
die, or at least be sick a lot and not able to develop at their
fullest potential. The advent of antibiotics is a two-edged sword.
Yes, they do help "cure" an immediate illness, but the fact that
they are being given so early in life is llikely a big contributer
to the "super bugs" which have learned to become resistant to many,
in some cases nearly all, antibiotics. Not only does antibiotic use
contribute to the development of such germs in the general
population, but probably on an individual basis as well.
