This reminded me - some years back there was a discussion of constipation,
especially after introduction of solids in breastfed babies, in the Nursing
Mothers' Association of Australia Newsletter. One suggestion that worked
for some mothers was chiropractic treatment. It seems in some babies,
misalignment of the lower vertebrae can cause constipation, but it often
does not show up while they are totally breastfed. Something perhaps for
mothers to bear in mind before they get advised to start long-term mineral
oil, or other chemical treatments.
