In my observation, the heated debates we get into on Lactnet often
start with an assumption of "always" or "never". I think there are
few, if any, situations where we can be completely absolute. (Even
the dreaded formula does have occasional legitimate uses.) There
may be techniques, gadgets, etc. that some of us never use and
others find helpful in certain situations. Some interventions that
a private practice LC would avoid can be helpful in the hospital
setting and vice versa.
Lets be open to each other and avoid "knee jerk" reactions when
someone mentions an approach that you would not use. Certainly, we
can and should share our reasons for not using a particular
intervention, but at the same time, let's listen to why someone does
use it. We just might learn something! Or at least we can gain
additional insight into why we choose not to use them.
As I have said many times before, this is NOT an exact science. We
use solid evidence- based interventions etc. when we have them, but
in many situations it does turn out to be "trial and error". Even
with highly researched situations, each mom/baby couple is unique
and may very well need a unique approach.
