<Yesterday the baby was taken off life
support. Parents have refused autopsy.>

What a terrible emotional blow this must be to them. Might that be
playing into their decision? Would any of the physicians take it upon
themselves to explain how helpful a full postmortem diagnosis might be to
other parents and babies, due to the effect this might have on
breastfeeding regulations there if no other cause can be proved? Or is
that idea too far out/insensitive to their grief?

In Ohio, at least in the past, something like this sounds as if it might
be a coroner's case. What about your state?
