Hello all,
I just thought I would send off a little post about what our WBW celebration
was like here in beautiful Brooklyn. BABE, the Brooklyn Alliance for
Breastfeeding Empowerment sponsored its yearly event in the Bedford-Stuyvesant
neighborhood. For those who don't know Brooklyn, this is a neighborhood in which
the National Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign would have been really pertinent.
BABE is made up mostly of dedicated professionals who work in WIC offices in
neighborhoods like Bed-Stuy. I am so proud to be in this group with them. I
sort of represent LLL groups of Brooklyn as well as the New York Lactation
Consultant Association.
Another hot August day, we had a huge tent set up, and plenty of water and
delicious donated food. We were the ending point for the 'nursing train' from
the event in Manhattan at Columbia-Presbyterian( or that is the name I know it
by...:). Picture this: subway car chock full of moms, nurslings, children,
and their supporters. In this car, three young men, talented drummers, one
with an 8 month old breastfeeding child at home, sees the moms and the signs and
is willing to drop everything, bring their drums and come with the caravan
to the event. They are wonderful and one drummer makes a little speech about
the normalcy and the importance of breastfeeding. We love them - I buy a CD.
There is more entertainment, teen girls and a boy dancing splendidly, an 11 yr
old steel drummer, Dr Jack Newman in the house, moms speaking from
experience, local health center director, a man, passionate about breastfeeding,
someone from NY state as well. There is a nursing song/dance entitled }The First
Food is the Best Food. I cannot believe how moving it all is. My almost 15-yr
old, who some there know from my slide presentation about nursing norms for
humans, is there and we serve food to everyone as our service gift. I survey
those nursing moms, the nursing babes, the former nurslings like my daughter,
and the other teens who may not have been nursed but will now get to see how
it is both so normal and so important.
It was a wonderful event. I feel honored to have been part of it.
Peace,
