The post regarding 'nipple protectors' seen at Whole Foods Market made me think of situations years ago when nipple shields were thick latex and often hindered milk supply.  Mothers would cut off the tip in an effort to let their nipple 'poke through' and get more nipple stimulation to help supply issues.   They ended up with very traumatized nipples from the edge of the hole that the nipple was poking through.
