Subject: Another lipase question

Any new findings about the cause of excess lipase? Client not taking dha or fish oil or flax oil or even prenatals. Unable to scald at work. Have run out of information so thought I would ask here.

Can scald when she gets home. If milk is for next day, probably unnecessary to scald. Pat in SNJ

I thought of hand warmers that you can purchase and squeeze them to activate. Outdoor workers use them in the winter. They can be carried in a diaper bag. We have a carafe for coffee and my husband swears it keeps his coffee warm all day when he is outdoors with it. I believe there may be small ones? Not sure of the safety of carrying warm milk all day, I thnk the hand warmers may be better.

Subject: Re: Zika Virus

Just ran across this today:

http://www.who.int/features/qa/zika-pregnancy/en/

"Zika virus has been detected in breast milk but there is currently no evidence that the virus is transmitted to babies though breastfeeding. Current WHO breastfeeding recommendations remain valid, in particular exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life."

If I understand correctly, the biggest potential threat is to the unborn baby if a pregnant mom contracts the virus. And the earlier in pregnancy, the more dangerous to the developing fetus. Otherwise, for adults, symptoms of infection are usually mild and most people recover. Complications are rare on a population level.

Experts aren't sure if Zika can be passed mom to baby during childbirth, and hence what the repercussions of that would be. This source says that experts believe "if a baby contracts Zika virus after being born, it may appear similar to illness in adults", though I can't locate the original source for that information. https://www.romper.com/p/can-zika-virus-harm-babies-after-theyre-born-its-officially-a-global-emergency-4886

I think there's just not much known yet about Zika and birth / breastfeeding - which is surprising since Zika is not a new discovery (it's been present in Africa and Asia for 50 years).

Here's another article I found helpful:

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/health/what-is-zika-virus.html?_r=0

no answers, just time on my hands today to dig around on the Internet ...

Kindly,

Michelle

Subject: Lipase

I am not connected to Nancy Mohrbacher so this not a commercial! She made up a 4 page handout on Lipase in milk from her book "Working and Breastfeeding Made Simple, called "When stored milk smells soapy or rancid." Google it :-) 1. All breast milk has lipase, some moms just have more.

2. Excess Lipase in milk slowly makes it smaell or taste bad.

3. Scalding can help. Lots of good advice on how to and when.

4. Tricks for using up stored milk that baby won't accept.

5. She suggested mom use bottled water, cut polyunsaturated fats in her diet, stop fish oil or flaxseed supplements, avoid any foods like anchovies [sardines??] and take extra antioxidants like beta Carotene.

Whole paper is very useful. Pat in SNJ
