I just saw your announcement about the new AAP guidelines on Breastfeeding
and the Use of Human Milk to be announced in the February issue of
Pediatrics. Despite your reassurances they do sound different, at least in
emphasis.

 

To clarify: the old guidelines called for 6 months of exclusive
breastfeeding, a year of breastfeeding AT MINIMUM, and continued
breastfeeding beyond a year for as long as mother and baby mutually desire.
Do these "updated" guidelines still emphasize that the APP advises mothers
to breastfeed for AT LEAST one year? Do the guidelines still sanction
breastfeeding beyond a year?

 

In teaching Clinical Aspects of Breastfeeding Management to medical students
I've discovered that the old guidelines were very helpful. I could use them
to emphasize that breastfeeding duration is important. I sure hope that
emphasis has not been watered down. Has it? Any particular reason for the
update?
