KD:  From what I learned in paralegal school, the idea that "touching"
equals "battery" comes from legal definitions.  If someone approaches you in
a threatening way and you feel that threat, that can be called
"assault".  If that someone touches you in any way when you don't want to be
touched, that can be called
"battery".  Normally, the lay person would think that "battery" would be
something to leave a bruise or a worse injury, but in practice, it's been as
simple as a finger pounding or an unwanted touching.
I'm not a lawyer, but that's what I was taught in class.
