Mary Ann,
We used to think (at least I used to think) that a baby at least "trying"
would get mom's hormones flowing and the milk would follow. The milk still
follows but with all the info about how we make milk, I would say that
although the attempts are worthy of noting, they should not be counted as
the 4-6 breastfeedings that make a "sufficient" first wr hours. (My
reference would be Larry Gartner and the AAP breastfeeding committee's work
on jaundice - I've never yet found out what "sufficient breastfeeding" is in
the first 24 hours!)
We often see primps' babies feed like champs the first hour, then fall
asleep and make up for lost time between about 20-24 hours. Somehow second
babies know better and feed more.....Have to wonder about cuing, reading
cues, and longer labors and births (we still have an epidural rate under 15%
and lots of unmedicated births).
