OK, this is about the underlying facts about why scissors hold persists, not
about Dr. Lawrence's article, which I haven't seen.

A few years ago Diane Wiessinger posted about this, extemely sensibly, and I
have subsequently become persuaded that she was right.

The substance was -- feel free to jump in if I'm distorting you, Diane,
please -- that the C hold is easier to do right in cross-cradle and in
football hold -- the big two in the immediate post partum -- but that it is
really hard to do without neck ache in cradle hold, in which a scissors hold
is a much more natural hand position for the opposite arm to use. Most
moms switch over the cradle as their baby gets more competent. Also at that
time, conveniently, the baby is going to grasp the nipple just as she or he
pleases, and how mom hold it has less and less to do with how it will end up
in the baby's mouth. Plus of course mom knows how it's supposed to feel, so
if it's in there wrong she's much more likely to break suction and start over
fast than she was on day two.

All of which may help explain why -- as was also pointed out in that thread,
I don't remember by whom -- pretty much every medieval representation of
breastfeeding I've ever seen, whether European christian ones or Japanese
ones in netsuke or whatever -- all coming from more serious bf cultures than
our own, show mothers using a scissor hold: they are pretty much never
nursing their newborns, but rather their 1 year olds or whatever.

FWIW.

OK, I'll admit it, I use a scissors hold, even though I *teach* the C hold.
