You'll be happy to know that the U. S. Army has funded a study telling us 
that mothers of
newborns don't exercise a lot in the immediate postpartum period.   " 'The 
reasons for these postpartum changes in activity, fitness, and strength are 
probably a reflection of the changes in the mother's responsibilities when 
becoming a parent,' the authors conclude."

A study published in the May issue of Medicine and Science of Sports and 
Exercise suggests that fitness and strength decline in the early postpartum 
period but improves by 27 weeks.
