Dear Heather,

Of course stooling patterns or lack thereof are not the problem in itself,
only a symptom or a piece of the puzzle to look at. I have also had the
rare baby who is not stooling every day and still gaining weight beautifully
and happy. But when you tell the Ped that the mom reports feeding for 1
hour straight, you did test weights and baby ate only 26 cc, and the baby
stools once in 6 days, it is frustrating for him to say that many babies
don't stool.
Now, I will say that this baby is slowly eeking her way back to birth
weight. She is 75 g under BW at 11 days. That is amazing to me that she is
even gaining at all. But I would be willing to register a good bet that
within the next week it will slowly taper off and become a problem.
We are trying to do early intervention here, to recognize problems before
they get to the stage of a newborn losing weight, and at this point, the
puzzle pieces are not pointing in a good direction!

Debbie, in terms of who is giving bad advice, well heck, it can be anyone!
See, in my case, her Yoga teacher also insisted that nursing babies don't
need to stool, as did her mother in law, who was a labor coach 20 years ago,
and of course let's add the Ped- so really now, I am the idiot!
