Julie,
I am thinking that maybe the good latch becomes shallow, as mom/baby relax
and perhaps baby slips or begins a small pulling on the tissue. Some babies
I see get a good latch but mom is not supporting either breast or baby well
enough and there is pulling or stretching or some movement of the breast
tissue. Therefore, if possible observe an entire feeding, offer tips for
eliminating this trauma, and treat with soap/water cleansing 3-4x per day,
and follow with a thin coat of antibiotic ointment, applied with clean
fingers or a clean cotton tipped swab.
