Friends -- I was given a great opportunity to lecture to our group of pediatric hospitalists yesterday regarding normal breastfeeding. It went so well, but I have our head peds hospitalist questioning the effect of fluid in labor on baby's weight loss in the first 24 hours. I referenced the Noel-Weiss journal article and also referenced Robin Hirth's materials from the 2013 USLCA conference that includes many other studies. This doctor does not believe that our "smart placentas" would allow labor fluid to influence weight loss. When she looked at the studies (she is *extremely* critical of research... a researcher at heart) she says the Noel-Weiss article is "statistically significant" but not "clinically significant." Until she has a physiologic reason for the placenta to allow this, she will question this finding. She says that some babies are more prone to diuresis in the first 24 hours anyway; it may not be related to IV fluid. So... if any MDs, or anyone else with this knowledge can help me with this, I would appreciate it! We are looking into the 24 hour weight baseline, but cannot move forward until we show this proof to our peds hospitalist. Thank you!
