Dawn: Lactaid is lactase enzyme, which only digests the lactose sugar in
cow's milk. It is helpful locally for someone whose gut is missing the
lactase. However, it would have no effect on the baby if the mother took
it. Mother's milk is full of lactose, and it is extremely rare (except
after a severe gastroenteritis which has temporarily wiped out the baby's
supply of lactase) for the baby to be lactose intolerant. Most cases of
cow's milk intolerance are due to intolerance of cow's milk protein,
which is unchanged by Lactaid. So if cow's milk intolerance is
suspected, the mother has to stop eating all milk products, not use
Lactaid. Hope this helps. Alicia. [log in to unmask]
