Patricia,

I had hives during breastfeeding my second child (2 day PP). I had had hives
previously in my life and never thought that their was a possible connection
between breastfeeding and the hives. It turned out that the prenatal
vitamins I was taking had D&C yellow #10. I did not realize what was causing
the hives until my newborn broke out in a rash (AKA newborn rash). Everyone
said it was normal but I was not comfortable with it. I notice that his rash
was very severe behind his neck and on his back. From previous experience
with the hives I knew that I was allergic to aspirin and I found out that
many people who are allergic to aspirin are also allergic to a yellow dye. I
did not know which one, but I knew there was a possiblity. I looked on the
back of the baby shampoo I had been using (J&J) and found it had D&C Yellow #
10. I then called the pharmacist wondering if there was a connection with my
vitamins, that where also yellow. It turned out that they also contained
yellow #10 and that there was a warning about the possible reaction of hives.
Upon elimination, my hives went away and so did the newborn rash. This may
not be her problem, but I would look into everything in her environment
first. What changes during her pregnancy? Is there something she uses, does
or is exposed to that is different during those times in her life? Diapers,
different laundry detergents, chemicals, medications.....

Good luck and I would love to hear the outcome.
