 Even though it is simplistic, I have found it very helpful to have a DARK
balloon (easier to see in the pump) and start the different pumps to show
how they work - or don't work.  Dads, especially, want to SEE what is
different - and some have such STRONG suction they say OW! Just looking at
it (like the cylinder hand pumps).

I also explain that there are differences not only in suction, suction curve
and frequency, but also mom's nipple size and tissue elasticity, which will
also affect the pumping.

I have met and seen some excellent producers with pumps I thought were
"terrible." 

To new parents I explain that there is also variability among women - no
guarantees - just that we know what "usually" works with "most" women...  

That is the same with everything professionals do - after all, "some" people
react to foods, medications and even physical therapy differently.  Why do
teachers need to know different methods of teaching the same thing?  Because
what works with one person doesn't with another!
