One thing to interject here that I didn't think of before.... it has been my
experience that most hospitals inject a mom with pitocin after the birth to
ensure that the placenta is completely expelled.  This alone makes the after
pains from birth a lot harder to handle, especially in the first few hours
pp.  Mine hurt so bad with my last that when this baby is born (if she ever
comes, I swear I will be the first woman pg forever!), I have already noted
it in my birth plan that I don't want the routine shot, and that I would
rather take the wait and see approach.  Most moms don't even realize that
they are getting the shot, they usually get it in all the excitement of the
birth and don't know until later why their pain is so bad.

Just a thought.
