Ms. Thornton's description of her co-breastfeeding experience reminds me
of an article I read in Mothering magazine about 3-4 years ago about
breastfeeding in Morocco.  The American author (a woman), was staying for
several months with a large extended family in Morocco.  There was a baby
boy, then about 2 years old, whose mother nursed him only briefly (perhaps
2-3 months) due to problems with sore nipples (or perhaps breast
infections), but he then continued to nurse with (I think) his grandmother
(in her early 40s) and various aunts!  At age 2, he was a nursing toddler,
and even tried to 'latch on' to the American lady one time when they were
sharing a bed together!  Obviously, this is perhaps a non-hygienic way of
providing nutrition (if one is worried about communicable diseases such as
hepatitis, perhaps), but I thought to myself, what a wonderful way to be
close to your family growing up!
