(Yes, Jodine, I really do mean for this to go to
Lactnet! :-) )

This morning my 6 yo's class combined with one of the
middle school classes for a "UNICEF Press Conference"
as the Horizons "Kids Helping Kids".

It's an annual event, with dancing, singing, signing
(ASL), poetry readings and a presentation by a guest
speaker. Our Congressperson and Senators are invited
as are state representatives and other community
leaders- it's a beautiful, very professionally done
event and raises several thousand dollars for UNICEF.

The focus of this year's was slavery, child slavery in
particular. More than two of the speakers referred to
the ethical harvesting of cocoa by enslaved people in
the Ivory Coast and mentioned that Hershey's embraced
the anti-slavery steps immediately and Nestle' was
strongly resistant.

Congressman Udall (D, Colorado) had to leave early and
I followed him out to speak to him about the
breastfeeding Ad Council sabotage- nervously, sad to
say, but largely because I knew he was in a hurry- but
I think I made my point. I explained as concisely as
possible what the goals of the campaign are, the need
for keeping the campaign strong (and what that means),
made the correlation to Nestle' and chocolate worker
enslavement, the need for contacting HHS Secretary
Tommy Thompson... he then asked if this is a current
issue- I assured him that it is indeed and is actually
3 mos overdue in getting started.

so- any of you Coloradoans, today is a good day to get
your letters to Mark Udall, if you haven't already
since he has heard about the Ad Council campaign
today. to the rest of you- thank you for keeping the
lowly me informed on this so I could speak directly to
someone who has more influence.

When the campaign has been going for 5 or 10 years,
I'd like to see the Horizons production team cover
breastfeeding, the WHO Code, etc - but I don't think
they'd be able to with current attitudes, even in
Boulder.
