This is keratin on the nipples that seems to break off in little granules? I remember a mom who never questioned it, just breastfed. Baby was in Level II but able to breastfeed. Baby spit some out, swallowed some, kept on nursing. Some came off in the pumped milk, eliciting a "yuck" factor from the nurses. I suggested skimming off the granules and using the milk. They would have plugged the bottle nipple anyway.

By discharge, nipples were cleared, skin looked normal. Mom reported mild sensitivity, but I didn't observe any nipple distortion at the end of the feed. Mom had BF'd a baby before, apparently w/o problems.

I have seen this twice. Both were black moms. Don't know if that is of any relevance. The second mom did essentially the same thing, but paid more attention to her nipples in the shower - she reported - once baby started the softening process.

No information on differences in diapers during these first two days.
