Blood glucose levels are drawn on babies considered at risk, i.e. <2500 gm,
meconium stained amniotic fluid, fetal distress, >4000 gm, temperature <97
degrees rectally. Not on all babies. I know that many of our breastfeeding
babies do not breastfeed in L&D for many reasons - mom not given premission
(never thought of this), takes to much of RN's time to help mom, baby didn't
"immediately" latch-on when put to breast (baby not interested), mom tired,
so when baby has glucose level checked and is good 40, the baby must be
given formula. Fortunately some of the nurses will ask me to take baby out
to nurse, but not many. Slowly we are climbing the mountain.
