In no particular order...Although I guess the very first thing you
need to do is figure out how much time you want to devote to
lactation, and what your area of expertise will be (like - maybe start
with "moms who aren't nursing well in the hospital and need to see
someone") -- also will you be able to bill Medicaid?? Will you go to
people's houses, or will they come to you?

(I started out as an independent IBCLC in the early 1990's and ended
up an RN IBCLC because I couldn't make a living and in fact probably
lost money in this rural area, God bless my husband)

1) Get yourself a box of 500 business cards. Make it easy for people
to reach you.

2) Write an article/press release and get a great pic of yourself with
a baby. Send it to whatever newspaper people read, and put it online
if you have online communities. If you don't like to write, have a
girlfriend do it, who does like to write.

3) Make a flyer - a foldable one that you can fold into 3. (So it will
fit in a standard brochure stand)

4) Bring your cards, flyers to the most-possible people that would
refer to you. WIC, any docs you know already, the hospital where you
had your baby. (I would call and ask for a meet-and-greet with the
nurse managers in the units that need you; bring them your flyers and
cards. Ask if you could introduce yourself to their staff.)

If you dream of yourself doing something else besides - you will need
to tweak this. But it's a start.

on the Vermont/New Hampshire border - two very rural states!
