Dear Debbie and all,
Please let me know how your case resolves. Just last night I had a call from
another LC who is working with a mom in a similar situation. The mom is now
double pumping 8oz in 10 minutes and stops even though she still feels full.
If she only pumps 5 minutes, she is miserable again within the half-hour.
She is about 2 weeks postpartum and has been pumping for her baby since baby
is not yet attaching for feeds.(That is its own problem). She was originally
pumping q2-3hrs and has now cut back to q4hrs. At 4 hours she is very
miserable and must pump for comfort. We discussed cabbage leaves and asking
about signs of a retained placenta fragment as well as pumping only to
comfort and waiting. I wondered if we may need to wait a week or two before
she gets a significant response since some of the information on oversupply I
have read states the response when changing bf management with baby at breast
may be 2 weeks. With these double supplies or more, it may take more time to
lower than induced oversupply with baby only.
Looking forward to hearing from you and I'll let my LC friend know we want to
hear how her mom does.
