You are right that if supplementation is required and the mother has ample milk, then she should use that to feed the infant. Of course, if the milk is there, and you can improve the breastfeeding and milk transfer, do that too.  Unfortunately, doctors and others often are not totally knowledgeable about nor totally comfortable and trusting of using breastmilk. Try to gently educate all those concerned. The sequential wt checks are important to make sure baby is going along well. 
You are asking good questions. Can the good LC that you mentioned do any mentoring with you?
