A couple of months ago on a post discharge follow up call, a woman told
me she had only been breastfeeding since she arrived home from the
hospital because she did not have any formula in the house. Of course I
praised her and assured her that breastfeeding the baby for every feeding
would help ensure a plentiful milk supply. But I thought about it later,
did her comment mean that if she had formula on hand would she have used
it? I think probably so. I work at an inner city hospital and most of
our patients combine formula with breastfeeding, and earlier than when
LCs recommend. Our NM likes the abm companies and many of our patients
get TWO gift packs at discharge, so I don't know how this woman was
missed, but sure was glad to hear the baby was exclusively breastfeeding
the first week.
