In my years of herbal practice, often times we have used sage smoke to clear
the lungs of congestion, toxins and excess mucus - it can also aid in
calming an annoying cough. The Native Americans here also smoke sage as
part of a combination in pipe smoke, it is also used for smudging and
clearing of negative energies.
As far as smoking sage when breastfeeding, this is a bit of a dilemma,
because although sage is sage and it does have a drying effect, there is a
difference in the way it effects the body when it is smoked versus when it
is ingested. I'd be careful with it, if you have a mom who chooses to smoke
sage, tell her that it is not advised due to its drying action on the body,
but if she must, only once or twice a day and monitor her supply carefully.
I know this was a lengthy response, sorry. But, I can't say anyone's ever
brought this to mind before. Oh well, live and learn. I hope you find this
information useful.
Wishing you health and wellness!
