I have seen many cases of severe nipple damage, including cases where it
looked like most of the nipple had been destroyed. What I am always
impressed by is how quickly and completely these nipples heal when the latch
is improved and if infection is prevented. I find that mothers are sometimes
panicked when their nipples look so bad (and hurt so much!) and think they
have permanently destroyed them in some way, and they feel much better when
I am able to calmly reassure them that I have seen other nipples that bad or
worse and that they generally heal quite quickly and look normal afterwards.
