Driscoll Children's Hospital of Corpus Christi, Texas does provide meal tickets for lactating women who have children in the hospital. The Food and Nutrition (Dietary) Department covers the meals. The thought process is it is assumed the hospital will provide nutritional needs for hospitalized children. In this case, the mother is providing the nutrition so the hospital wants to make sure the mother is taking care of herself and eating nutritional meals.

This program has been in place for at least the eight years I have been employed. The clerks on the units enter in the data to order the meal tickets. Dietary sends the tickets to the unit. The staff give then issue the tickets. The process works well.

Subject: Question

Currently I am on a team that needs me to ask the following question - unless you feel your response is beneficial to the group you can reply to me privately.

For hospitals in the USA, specifically the NICU's, does the hospital provide meals in any way for the mom's that are breastfeeding/providing breastmilk? To be more specific, this would be the mom's that are no longer in-patients themselves and what my group really wants to know is; if this is done, how is it funded?
Thanks Much, Jodie Drum RN, IBCLC & at work in Washington, D.C
