Nikki answered my question, and in response, stated:
<< If I, as a licensed healthcare professional make a recommendation to a
mother that she take a specific drug, herb or remedy, she will hear my
recommendation as authority. I have to be careful because I can loose my
license. I am not legally permitted to prescribe for that reason. >>

Nikki, you are speaking as an RN, I presume. Where does it say that you will
lose your license? Where does it say you are not legally permitted to
prescribe? And the major question: Is "recommending" or "advising"
(OTC/herbs/homeopathy) considered to be the same as "prescribing?"

What if you were not an RN or otherwise licensed healthcare professional, but
were an IBCLC. How would that change things? Or would it?

What you are implying is there is no difference between saying something to
the effect of: "It might help if you take some XXXX which you can get at the
health food store to increase your milk supply," or "I'm writing a
prescription for dicloxicillin for your mastitis." ???

Nikki, I hear what you are saying -- but I want to make sure that you (and
everyone else who says this) are basing this dictum on written evidence, and
not "because I've always done it this way." (I'm not picking on you, honest.
I've been thinking about this particular issue for a long time, and was
going to post the question anyway -- you just happened to post something
first!!)
