Christine has some interesting thoughts on gagging/vomiting babies and
stress levels. I must admit I had not made the connection, but it seems
logical. Our unit has a very high caesarean rate. I have long suspected
that more gastric wash-outs are performed during the weekends and afternoons
when I am not on duty. I usually manage to get the babies to the breast
(naked) within the first hour after birth and keep mom and baby together for
as long as possible. Most staff think I am somewhat crazy! A little formal
observation may prove interesting! By the way, "Touching" was a book that
helped shape my parenting - many, many years ago. Unfortunately many
parents are reading books with a very different message today.
