Dear Friends:

The discussion about many caretakers for an infant is interesting.

To me, having one constant parent (Dad) and a stream of nurturing women to
breastfeed seems like the best that could happen to this baby whose mother
died.

As for many caregivers.........weren't/aren't villages similar with many
caregivers? The baby is passed around and can suckle from other women
besides the mother. The baby is always carried, but not necessarily by the
mother.

As for the many language analogy: I knew a man once who was old enough to be
in school before he realized that each grandparent and his parents all spoke
to him in different languages. Lucky man who went on to work at the UN (my
dad worked with him) having easy fluency in 6 languages.

Isn't a characteristic of the human brain that it is plastic? Humans can and
do adapt to a variety of situations; witness all our different cultures.
There is no one right way. Thank goodness!!

warmly,
