A "central" hematocrit can be more accurate than a finger/heel stick depending
on technique.  Also, there has been recent suggestions that a venous draw
might actually be less painful/traumatic than a heel stick. (much of this
depends on the technique and skill of the phlebotomist)
Also, when they do a venous draw, sometimes they collect "extra" blood so as
to perform other tests if required, e.g. iron level, ferritin level, etc. to
help evaluate anemia.
