"About 7 - 8 years ago I saw a documentary about a woman (I believe a
scientist) who had tested menstrual blood for toxins, and posed the theory
that menstruation is one way that the body does clean itself. I have not
been able to locate this research on the web; does anyone know more?"

Can't remember the woman's name. She got one of the McArthur genius grants,
and her main idea was that menstruation cleansed the body of bacteria
brought into the vagina/uterus by sperm. She didn't seem to be aware that
most women in the world seldom have menstrual periods because they are
either pregnant or lactating. Her work has been thoroughly discredited, and
she has moved on to studying astrophysics or some such thing.
