Dawn,
You mention that milk slops out of the sides of baby's mouth even when
he bottle-feeds. Years ago, at a conference presented by Lynn Wolf and Robin
Glass, one of them (sorry, I don't remember which one) made the comment that
a baby who can't breastfeed well *and* can't bottle-feed well either has a
*feeding* problem, not just a *breastfeeding* problem. This baby could probably
be helped quite a bit by a CranioSacral therapist or an OT trained in working
with breastfeeding babies, or even both. The therapies are not the same, and
some babies benefit most by receiving more than one type of therapy. When
referring to an OT, or helping the mother figure out how to find one, try to find
one that either has had experience/training in working with breastfeeding
babies, or who is willing to learn about them. Unfortunately, too many of them
approach problems by saying "put the baby on a bottle, and then we'll work on
what's wrong." While I realize that this particular baby is already being
bottle-fed, the mother *wants* to breastfeed so it is best to find an OT who will
work towards this goal.
